The Hispanic Family
Hispanics in the U.S. share a common language and similar values, traditions and customs, no matter their country of origin. Even though there are variations in expression, food, and music, the one thing Hispanics, in general, value very highly is FAMILY. Many Hispanics have come to the United States in search of a better life with and for their family. In the process of striving for “the American Dream,” Hispanics value their family, which they’d like to keep as a united family. This may be a hard task, especially for those raising their kids in a country and culture different from their own. Even so, many Hispanics will do whatever they can keep their family united. We want to help!
The Hispanic Family is often known for being a united family. A united family provides a foundation for raising healthy children, offers tools to help kids make wise choices and helps our children develop skills to avoid those things that could stand in the way of their success and happiness.
The Hispanic Family also prides itself on preserving its cultural traditions and family values such as: unity, respect, love and affection, communication, responsibility, and hard work, among others.
An important area where family can help kids is with sex. But it can be tough for parents to talk to their children about waiting to have sex and communicating their values and expectations clearly. Sex has been and continues to be a taboo subject in our community. But with all the information our kids get about sex from everywhere else, we can’t afford to avoid the subject any longer. It’s time to break the cycle because we want the best for our children. Parents Speak Up!
The Hispanic Outreach Center (HOC) seeks to help parents talk to their kids early and often about sex and the value of waiting until marriage. The HOC provides tools that will help you make the conversation easier.
